Equestrian statue This equestrian statue commemorating Felipe IV is the focal point of Plaza de Oriente (Park of the east). East Park is really on the west side of the (old) city but takes its name from the fact it is the park to the east of the Royal Palace, the big building in the background.

This statue is action-packed with the horse rearing. This posed a great problem in engineering to keep the whole thing balanced. Galileo of astronomical fame was consulted. He said that if the front-half of the horse were hollow and the back-half solid it would be stable---and so it is.
