NEW HOME OF PAUL'S PLACE!

Visit MADRIDPLUS, my other website.

Picture of Paul I'm a retired chemist immersed in studies of computers and Spanish. My photo (left) was taken in the main hall of my Spanish school in Madrid, but click on the photo (51 K) to see how I had magically become "famous" in Spain!
For newcomers to this site, look to the left for my principal links to this site and to a few outside sites: son's and granddaughter's, for examples. Red type indicates that site has been expanded or corrected since the last update in October, 2008. In this case, the red color will indicate any new material published in 2009.
My Madrid sections are extensive and have their own site (MADRIDPLUS).
One of the latest features on Paul's Place is a short discussion of calculating and using the derivative of |X|, the absolute-value function. If you like calculus, go for it!
My chemistry sites tell about some of my professional work: HISTORY (story of my company, Pure Synthetics, Inc.), PURIFY SOLIDS (a new distillation for solids), MAKING REAL MAPLE FLAVORING (Pure Synthetics' unusual synthetic method). My DULONG-PETIT LAW site tells about my improved equations for a "bad" law and describes how I discovered, 167 years after its announcement in 1819, that the Frenchmen had invented some of their published data. You will definitely need a background in science to fully understand the distillation page, the maple-flavoring synthesis and the Dulong-Petit law work.
My SPANISH and COMPUTER sites tell about my retirement hobbies. But my late wife Helen (JPG: 26K) would understand perfectly how I spend my days now- - -probably with a disapproving frown. A few years before her untimely death in 1994, she had developed a passion for golf, and, after looking over a wide range of retirement cities, we chose San Diego because its weather supports year-round golf! After Helen's death, I chose to fulfill that part of our plan. Therefore, in October, 1994, I moved to San Diego. I lived for one year in Carmel Valley, a northern neighborhood of San Diego, to learn the lay of the land. In Dec, 1995, I moved to University City, a neighborhood just west of the La Jolla neighborhood. Finally in 2002, I joined the elegant group of senior citizens living at Vi at La Jolla Village, also in University City.
As for the golf, I don't play any more since that was her game. If you like soaps, you can read on my HISTORY page about the great contributions Helen made to the success of our company Pure Synthetics, Inc. and how she made a key discovery in our synthesis of the maple-flavoring compound, MCP.
At this point, you can pick your spot and dive in. Formerly, I sent you here to Alcalá de Henares in Spain to Encarni's website to hear a Scot Joplin rag. She still has the same website but "The Entertainer" can no longer be heard. But I give you Encarni's site anyway since she has a rare wit. Alcalá de Henares is 35 kilometers northeast of Madrid and is famous as the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quijote, and for having one of the oldest universities in Europe there. Since it's a sister city of San Diego, you might also want to visit Alcalá de Henares.
